Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope to much for a beginner?

A Schmidt Cassegrain refers to a style of telescope, not a particular telescope. It's a reflecting telescope, just a different set-up. If you want to get into amateur astronomy, get the best telescope you can afford, and that means the biggest primary mirror.

The main disadvantages of a Schmidt Cassegrain for a beginner are:
1) Narrow field of view.harder to find things.
2) Expensive for its size. Same money buys a larger Newtonian, with brighter images.
3) Low contrast. Detail in planets harder to see.

That said, a smallish Schmidt Cassegrain (6-8" aperture) with a reducer/corrector installed makes a nice starter scope. For the beginner, you are reccommended to go for Celestron NexStar 6SE with r/c.

If you want to buy quality telescope, buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online, don't buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk.

You might want to visit a few open observing sessions provided by your local amateur astronomy club. Schmidt Cassegrain is good thou but you will get some idea of what to expect, and you will get an opportunity to try before you buy. Good Luck and Clear Skies!
